Fall YA Scavenger Hunt #YASH

Hello and Welcome to the 9^th YA Scavenger Hunt! This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes!

Hello! I am Lisa Voisin, your hostess for this leg of the hunt.

This is me

I’m a city girl who loves nature and lives beside a temperate rainforest at the base of a mountain.

I love coffee but I have over two dozen different kinds of tea in my cupboard. (It’s a compulsion)

The Hunt:

On this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each participating YA author, you also get a secret number. Add up the numbers, and enter it for a chance to win a major prize–one lucky winner will receive at least one signed book from each author on my team in the hunt! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online until noon PST on Sunday, October 5th!

Before you go on though, check out the amazing author I’m hosting. But, first, a few rules.

Directions: Below, you’ll notice that I’ve listed my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the green team, and then add them up (don’t worry, you can use a calculator!). Hint: the secret number is highlighted in:

Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally. Anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

Is Kath about to make the biggest mistake of her life?

Seventeen-year-old Kath McKenny has a date to the end-of-term party with her since-forever crush. He publicly messaged her to confirm, but there’s been a recent status update: he’s taking the new girl—giggly, pretty, well-developed Lana Elliot—instead. After being thoroughly humiliated in front of half the school, best friend Chay talks Kath into revenge: a scheme to create the perfect—and very fake—online guy for Lana. Once she falls for him, they’ll show her what it’s like to get brutally dumped.

Everything is going to plan until Kath starts spending more-than-just-friends time with the other new kid in town—Lana’s dreamy older brother, Sebastian. Kath finds herself getting in deep—in love and drowning in guilt, she tries to put an end to her prank, but it’s taken on an unstoppable momentum of its own, with very real consequences.

Thanks Lisa for having me on your blog today. I’m super excited to be a part of the hunt!

At the beginning of Fake we meet Kath daydreaming about her upcoming date with her long time crush, Joel. He’s finally noticed her! Of course nothing turns out the way she plans or hopes over the next few pages leading to her coming up with her perfect plan for online revenge – using a fake guy.

This bonus scene lets you see what happened when Joel actually asks Kath the big question.

 

Fake: Bonus Scene

Two weeks earlier.

“It’s totally a date.” My best friend’s words echo in my head, but now, sitting here, I’m not sure Joel’s suggestion to move our usual history tutoring to Sweety’s Icecreamery is a result of anything but hunger.

He chose one of the secluded pink and grey booths at the back for us, which has to be a good sign, and he insisted on paying for our milkshakes and his burger. But he’s been completely focused on the points for his WW1 essay for the last twenty minutes. Well, apart from checking his status updates with the phone momentarily silent on the table next to him.

I’m pretty sure he hasn’t noticed the cute black top I bought from this awesome second-hand place up the coast especially for the occasion. The one my enthusiastic best friend, Chay, promised made me look totally incredible. Although she was checking her eye makeup using her phone at the time.

His blonde head is bent over his notebook, his brows adorably knotted in concentration as he studies the question and he smells amazing. I breathe in the scent of clean, fresh boy. He must have showered right before coming over. Which could be another good sign. Or it could be because he came straight from soccer practice.

The bell dings over the door. Joel doesn’t look up but I can’t help turning. I might have had a crush on him since forever but it doesn’t make watching him make notes on the points we went through all that thrilling.

The two new kids in town stroll in like they own the place. Lana, a year below me, has already attracted a clique of disciples who squeal as she approaches their table. Followed by her older brother Sebastian.

Sebastian of the green eyes and bright blue sneakers who leaves as fast as he came. And who I so don’t mean to stare after because I’m not one of those girls to be sucked in by an air of aloofness.

Caught.

Lana lifts her perfect eyebrows and then narrows her eyes at me.

I don’t know what I did to piss her off but I’m not exactly the confrontation type. I focus back on Joel. Friendly, cute Joel with no annoying sense of mystery and who’s liked by all. More than liked by me, despite him being oblivious of my interest so far. Time to act. I reach out and touch his arm making the actual contact as though I’ve been trying to get his attention over the murmuring around us. “You could probably expand on that last one.”

“Yeah.”

He doesn’t even notice I’m touching him. So much for my best friend’s fail-safe boy tips.

I squeeze my eyes shut. I’ve endured weeks and weeks of this sweet, sweet torture. Helping him. Hoping he’ll finally look up one day and see Kath the girl, rather than his tutor.

“Kath?”

My eyes fly open. Now, he’s looking at me. Of course. Heat climbs into my cheeks, because the way he’s looking at me is… different. His usual happy grin is missing. He’s all serious. I have never seen him anything but joking around.

This could be good or really, really bad.

“Yes?” I say. It comes out all high pitched.

He plays with his straw. “I just wanted to tell you, it’s been great to have your help. I think I’m totally going to pass this year, and I couldn’t have caught up without you.”

Gratitude… it’s not the realisation of true love I was hoping for. I force a smile. “I’m happy to help.”

His straw drips strawberry shake all over the table.

I sip at my strawberry milkshake. Not my favourite but he recommended it. The slurp of it drowns out whatever it is he’s saying.

“…dance? Unless you don’t like dress ups?” he asks to finish.

I gasp and the shake goes down the wrong way. I cough, blinking tears from my eyes. Did he just ask me to the dance? And I’m grinning and coughing and trying to unscramble the muffled sounds I heard from him as I gurgled milkshake.

His hand pats my back. Warm, comforting. “Are you okay?”

I breathe in the sweetest air ever and hope for the best. “Yes and yes I like dress-up parties.” I study his face. No, he’s not looking at me like I’m crazy. He did just ask me to the dance.

He asked me to the dance.

Although it was after the thanking me thing. Is there such thing as a gratitude date? I need to text Chay to discuss.

 

Here we leave Kath and she’s thinking her dreams have come true.
